    We present different conditions for the existence of a pair of upper semicontinuous functions representing an interval order on a topological space without imposing any restrictive assumptions neither on the topological space nor on the representing functions. The particular case of second countable topological spaces, which is particularly interesting and frequent in economics, is carefully considered.     The relationship between Mathematical Utility Theory and the Integrability Problem: some arguments in favour

    The resort to utility-theoretical issues will permit us to propose a constructive procedure for deriving a homogeneous of degree one, continuous function that gives raise to a primitive demand function under suitably mild conditions. This constitutes the first elementary proof of a necessary and sufficient condition for an integrability problem to have a solution by continuous (subjective utility) functions. Such achievement reinforces the relevance of a technique that was succesfully formalized in Alcantud and Rodríguez-Palmero (2001). The analysis of these two works exposes deep relationships between two apparently separate fields: mathematical utility theory and the revealed preference approach to the integrability problem.Strong Axiom of Homothetic Revelation; revealed preference; continuous homogeneous of degree one utility; integrability of demand.

    Rotational sensitivity of the "G-Pisa" gyrolaser

    G-Pisa is an experiment investigating the possibility to operate a high sensitivity laser gyroscope with area less than 1m21 \rm m^2 for improving the performances of the mirrors suspensions of the gravitational wave antenna Virgo. The experimental set-up consists in a He-Ne ring laser with a 4 mirrors square cavity. The laser is pumped by an RF discharge where the RF oscillator includes the laser plasma in order to reach a better stability. The contrast of the Sagnac fringes is typically above 50% and a stable regime has been reached with the laser operating both single mode or multimode. The effect of hydrogen contamination on the laser was also checked. A low-frequency sensitivity, below 1Hz1 \rm Hz, in the range of 10−8(rad/s)/Hz10^{-8} \rm {(rad / s)/ \sqrt{Hz}} has been measured.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, presented at the EFTF-IFCS joint conference 200

    Computational Analysis of Balloon Catheter Behaviour at Variable Inflation Levels

    Aortic valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure for the dilatation of stenotic aortic valves. Rapid ventricular pacing is an established technique for balloon stabilization during this procedure. However, low cardiac output due to the pacing is one of the inherent risks, which is also associated with several potential complications. This paper proposes a numerical modelling approach to understand the effect of different inflation levels of a valvuloplasty balloon catheter on the positional instability caused by a pulsating blood flow. An unstretched balloon catheter model was crimped into a tri-folded configuration and inflated to several levels. Ten different inflation levels were then tested, and a Fluid-Structure Interaction model was built to solve interactions between the balloon and the blood flow modelled in an idealised aortic arch. Our computational results show that the maximum displacement of the balloon catheter increases with the inflation level, with a small step at around 50% inflation and a sharp increase after reaching 85% inflation. This work represents a substantial progress towards the use of simulations to solve the interactions between a balloon catheter and pulsating blood flow

    Effect of the Alterations in Contractility and Morphology Produced by Atrial Fibrillation on the Thrombosis Potential of the Left Atrial Appendage.

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia mainly affecting the elderly population, which can lead to serious complications such as stroke, ischaemic attack and vascular dementia. These problems are caused by thrombi which mostly originate in the left atrial appendage (LAA), a small muscular sac protruding from left atrium. The abnormal heart rhythm associated with AF results in alterations in the heart muscle contractions and in some reshaping of the cardiac chambers. This study aims to verify if and how these physiological changes can establish hemodynamic conditions in the LAA promoting thrombus formation, by means of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses. In particular, sinus and fibrillation contractility was replicated by applying wall velocity/motion to models based on healthy and dilated idealized shapes of the left atrium with a common LAA morphology. The models were analyzed and compared in terms of shear strain rate (SSR) and vorticity, which are hemodynamic parameters directly associated with thrombogenicity. The study clearly indicates that the alterations in contractility and morphology associated with AF pathologies play a primary role in establishing hemodynamic conditions which promote higher incidence of ischaemic events, consistently with the clinical evidence. In particular, in the analyzed models, the impairment in contractility determined a decrease in SSR of about 50%, whilst the chamber pathological dilatation contributed to a 30% reduction, indicating increased risk of clot formation. The equivalent rigid wall model was characterized by SSR values about one order of magnitude smaller than in the contractile models, and substantially different vortical behavior, suggesting that analyses based on rigid chambers, although common in the literature, are inadequate to provide realistic results on the LAA hemodynamics

    Field-amplified sample injection and sweeping micellar electrokinetic chromatography in analysis of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid in wheat

    Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, has been classified as probably carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In the present study a method based on Field-Amplified Sample Injection and Sweeping Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography (FASI sweep-MEKC) has been developed and validated for determination of glyphosate and its microbial metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in wheat flour. The method involved a preliminary solid phase extraction for cleanup of the aqueous extracts from wheat flour, based sequentially on C18 and strong anion exchange cartridges, followed by derivatization using 9-fluorenylmethylchloroformate. Optimization of sample cleanup and derivatization procedure was carried out by a HPLC-UV method, whereas FASI sweep-MEKC was applied for achieving the sensitivity necessary for analysis of real samples. To this regard, optimum conditions involved the use of an extended path fused-silica capillary (80 cm total length, 50 μm, i.d.) filled with a high concentration buffer (sodium phosphate 100 mM, pH 2.2). Electrokinetic sampling was carried out at −10 kV with injection time of 700 s and the separation of the loaded analytes was performed under MEKC conditions using sodium phosphate buffer 50 mM at pH 2.2, supplemented with sodium dodecyl sulfate, 100 mM. The method was validated for linearity, precision, accuracy and sensitivity, showing that using conventional UV detection (210 nm) the achieved limit of quantitation (LOQ) values for both the analytes were widely lower than those set by Authorities. In particular, LOQ for glyphosate and AMPA were found to be 5 and 2.5 ng/mL, respectively, corresponding to 0.1 and 0.05 mg/kg, in wheat flour. The method, applied to commercially available real samples (wheat flour from different manufacturers) and to an experimental sample obtained by cv. Svevo wheat, can be considered as a convenient alternative to the existing approaches in analysis of complex matrices

    The Ex Cassa di Risparmio site is a reclaimed channel - first Imperial age - located in the center of the city of Modena and it is unique in Emilia Romagna for the archaeobotanical information provided on urban area. The study of seeds/fruits remains produced a framework which can be considered representative for reconstructing the vegetal environment of Mutina at the moment of maximum splendor of the Roman empire and of the city; some species appeared particularly worthy of insights, such as weld - Reseda luteola L., grass species that produces a very stable yellow pigment used since ancient times for dyeing fabrics like wool, linen and silk. The abundance of seeds found in the drained canal suggests agricultural practices implemented in peri-urban area of the city and presumably related to the economy of this prosperous Roman colony. Agriculture should have been a strong element of its economy in addition to ceramic production, sheep farming and the textile industry
